Evaluating young Rollers in the Fall

By this time of the year the young Roller males should be singing together in a small aviary.   See typical training flight shown below:img_1243

These young birds constitute the core group of young males to be used during the upcoming Roller Canary Song Contest Show season  and equally or more importantly be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the one’s breeding program and pairing decisions made in the Spring.   To help tutor the young birds a good old birds may be used.  While this can be valuable, it is not mandatory and care should be taken to listen to the old bird to ensure his Song is good.    The breeder / owner should listen daily to the young birds if possible.  This will allow you hear the Song development.  While there are many tours heard this time, the goal is to ensure:

  • All young males are singing freely without distractions
  • No faults from the young birds are heard
  • All birds are healthy and strong

The next step during this time of year is to cage off the young males in teams of four, see attached image.
